True Bistro (love)

The cloudy weather today has for perfectly for my day of homework, music studying and cleaning up my room. I managed to get a great workout in at the gym- even though I almost face-planted into a weight machine after I tripped over a 45-pound plate and yelped so loudly I got stares! The bruise on my shin is just a sign of how tough I am right?

Last night I had the most fun date, complete with on-point dirty martinis and literally the best vegan food I have ever eaten. Actually, some of the best food period! We went to True Bistro in Somerville, and despite not taking reservations the food more than made up for it. Not the mention the service was incredible, I think my water glass was refilled 12 times.
We ordered the crispy oyster mushrooms to start, then split the blackened seitan with collards and grits as well as a phyllo purse stuffed with sweet potato, seitan and what must have been a cinnamon sauce! It was so flavorful and incredible. We finished off the meal with an apple cobbler topped with walnut-rum ice cream and of course enjoyed a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon on the side. I couldn’t believe that every single thing on the menu was vegan and it was so exciting to be able to choose anything I wanted without having to make annoying requests like no cheese, no butter, um is there honey in that? Even my date, who is absolutely not vegan, was extremely pleased with all the food and couldn’t get over the grits. 🙂

TB just became one of my favorite restaurants in Boston, and it was perfect for a date. Cozy but still a lively environment, and the company was fantastic too. I can’t wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!!

I hope you had a great weekend full of delicious food and even better company!

Going out in style

Happy Saturday friends!!

I was MIA last night because I went out with some friends to get drinks to celebrate the weekend! And may have ended up staying out way past my usual bedtime…. But it was totally worth it. I don’t have any absolute plans for the day besides doing some homework, paperwork and getting ready for a date tonight. And who am I kidding, that’ll take all day to prepare for! Jk. 😉 I might be one of the most low-maintenance gals I know, and can easily get ready to go out in about 20-25 minutes. I consider it a talent!

Anyone share my pet peeve for people who take forEVER to get ready to leave the house? I mean seriously, how long does it take to put on a shirt and pants and shoes??

I hope you’re having a great weekend!

Spring has sprung!

Happy first day of Spring!

I enjoyed the day here as it hit about 52 degrees in Boston- score! I had a really lovely day; working out, attending class and a coaching, doing some work emailing for new students I’ll be taking on next week, and skyping with Mom. It’s always a pleasure to chat with her and we may have outdone ourselves, staying on for over an hour and forty-five minutes! I guess we had a lot to catch up on. 🙂

Now I’m settling in for a night of relaxation with a big bowl of popcorn and some Netflix time. It’s been a pretty go-go-go week since I got back Sunday night so I’m thankful for a little respite before a fun weekend.

What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day?
I love curling up with a good book or reading some blogs, or zoning out to Netflix. And obviously a good snack or dessert has to happen too.

Zooming past me

How is it already Wednesday night??
I feel like this week is just flying right past me. It might have to do with being on break last week, but man am I happy it’s not dragging.

I taught my first French class this evening and I think it went extremely well! Even though I was feeling a bit exhausted this afternoon after a lot of traveling between Harvard square and BU and Brighton this morning, I had just enough energy to get me through the end of the day. Work will continue to get busier over the next few weeks but I am thankful I’m not going to be as busy with school, so bring it on!

First days back are always challenging and today was no exception. It started off with a difficult voice lesson and although it was definitely needed, I came out of it feeling a little defeated. It might have to do with the jetlag or the insufficient sleep, but whatever it was, I’m hoping to wake up feeling more optimistic and ready to put in some hard work.

This afternoon, acting class focused on viewpoints and getting line athletically aware of our bodies and reacting to external and internal influences and impulses. I’m not new to this concept, but it was great to just move around and not take myself so seriously this afternoon. When you’re rolling around on the ground and your body is covered in dust and dirt, it’s hard NOT to let go a little bit.

Transitions are always tough, but seeing all my friends again today definitely lifted my spirits and much as I may be missing the Californian sunshine, I’m hoping Boston’s arctic freeze will thaw soon enough.

The final stretch

Safely arrived on the east coast after a long day of travel, but I am happy to be back and looking forward to kicking off the week with my classes tomorrow as well as work later this week.

Miss her so much already but I know I’ll be home again before I know it!

See you later

Tonight I just want to say how thankful I am to have been able to spend this beautiful week home with my parents. I ate so much delicious vegan food, introduced my parents to several new restaurants and they were so happy and open to trying them, I couldn’t have been more proud.
We had a chance to do some traveling north and south, and had some good laughs along the way. I had some ups and a few downs in accepting everything that comes with recovery from disordered eating, but this week has been extremely liberating and has allowed me to get much more in touch with my cravings and hunger cues, as well as recognizing when they are real or whether they are caused by an emotional need.

I was even able to catch up with my best friend since she was in town for the weekend, and boy did it feel good to just unload all our news to each other. We made a pact to seriously keep in touch more frequently for the rest of this school year, so we aren’t giving ourselves any excuses about getting too busy. Keeping up with each other’s lives is too important to let slide.

This break really came at the perfect time for me, and I know with only 6-7 weeks left of the semester it’ll be over before I know it. I can’t wait to come back but I know I’m in for a great couple months back in Boston until the summer. Here’s hoping the sunny California weather follows me east!

Change is uncomfortable

Continuing on with my sporadic posts since I’m home… 🙂

Today I’m off to the coast towards Carmel and Monterey to get in some time by the ocean, but yesterday I had a wonderful day trip into the city with Mom. We hit up Source for lunch and I was so happy we managed to get out there! My mom ordered the vegetable curry dish which looked great, and I had the Vegan Moussaka with cashew cream sauce and it blew me away! Cashew cream is definitely on my must-make list now. I have no idea how they made it but it was like vegan bechamel!

We hung out around the city for a few more hours and returned home to meet up with Dad for dinner at Scratch. Although I have to admit they weren’t the most vegan friendly, my hard cider more than made up for it, as did the company. 🙂

Although I’ve really been enjoying my time home, it’s also brought up a lot of old memories for me. Memories of the summer when I was going through depression, panic attacks, and horrible anxiety, and when I felt so insecure in my body I didn’t know what to do with myself anymore. Now looking back, I can see all those things so much more clearly, but with my past 6 or so months of healthy weight gain, I also can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic for the way I looked then.

It’s difficult to try on clothes that used to fit, only to not even be able to pull them over your butt… But I am fighting to remind myself that no matter what I looked like on the outside, I was broken on the inside. And that is what I’m trying to heal right now. I’m focusing on all the things I can do and all that I’m grateful for now, but I am still struggling. I know this is going to be an ongoing battle for me, and this is just one of the bumps (or mountains) I’m going to encounter along the road, but my desire to keep moving forward and not go back to that empty person I used to be, is going to keep pushing me along on the right path.

Time is flying!

I can hardly believe it’s already Wednesday. This week is just flying by and before I know it I’ll be on my way back to freezing Boston…

Not before I enjoy some awesome mother-daughter time though! We hopped over to downtown Palo Alto for lunch at Oren’s Hummus, home of the creamiest and most incredible hummus in the world. Seriously, it is so good I have dreams about it when I’m back east… We followed that by enjoying the sweet sunshine walking around downtown Los Gatos and then getting our nails done. I think both of us nearly fell asleep by the end when our nails were drying, I guess we need to catch up on some Z’s.

I had somewhat of an emotional afternoon, since I’m still overhauling my whole relationship with eating and my body, but thankfully I had my best friend by my side to help me get through it. The past 6 months have been such a tremendous growing period for me, but when something gets me down, I tend to forget all of the work I have already put in, and all the rewarding success I’ve had already. I expect myself to be able to make these huge changes basically from one day to the next instead of honoring the fact that it really is a process and it’s going to take some time to get where I’m heading.

Who do you turn to when you’re struggling?
I’m so thankful to have my mom as well as other great friends and a support system to help me get through even the roughest of days.

Recapping a few days home

After a couple days off of the blog, I’m happy to report back that I am absolutely loving being home! Although I miss my brother, who is still in school because his spring break isn’t for a couple more weeks, I’m digging being an only child for a little while. 😉

Yesterday, I had the privilege of singing a solo piece at both of my mom’s choral concerts. Our good family friends came to see us and it was really special to be able to share this concert and performance experience with my mom. The concerts took place at two retirement homes and I think the audiences really enjoyed the performance. It’s always very special to share music with people who so clearly appreciate it and I know from past experience that these older folks are some of the most appreciative.

On another note, since food is a pretty crucial (and super fun!) part of being home, we’ve eaten at a couple delicious restaurants, most notably Lyfe Kitchen where I devoured the best vegan burger I’ve had yet! Located in downtown Palo Alto, right off yuniversity Avenue, the atmosphere is casual but modern, and the service is incredibly quick. They have a wide selection of organic wine and beer, as well as 3 different menus based on your dining preferences and dietary concerns- Gluten free, Vegan/Vegetarian and Everything-tarian. There were so many things I wanted to try so I will definitely be back before this week ends.

Today started off with a rockin, butt-kicking boot camp at my gym! Holy cow I think I sweat out at least a gallon. And I loved every minute of it.

This afternoon mom and I took a trip downtown to hit up DSW for a new pair of audition shoes, and I totally lucked out finding these babies. They’re just the right height, super comfortable (for heels) and they’ll go nicely with all my audition garb. 🙂

The best part of being home has really been spending time with my parents, and having some wonderful talks with my mom. They arise somewhat randomly but we always have great discussions about all sorts of things, which I love and treasure.

Happy Tuesday!
